Palm Desert SEO Expert and Websites by Rouzell

If you search: “Palm Desert SEO Expert” – you’ll find my work. This is the essence of SEO – often called content marketing is the process of optimizing things posted on Internet sites in a way that helps search engines deliver relevant links in the results of your searches. Whew! That was one long sentence.

If you search for what is SEO, you may get seven and a half million results. You may just want an easy to digest overview of how SEO works. My site, mousehelp.org will show you that. If you want to “do-it-yourself” – click this link to “8 Tips for Do-It-Yourself SEO” where I’ve spelled out the basics.

The first link in the list below is to the original web page (list of websites I’ve created) posted in 2012, and updated earlier this year.
The list of links under, “More recently,” includes sites I’ve created or revised in 2015.

Here are some examples of my work:

More recently, I’ve created (or updated) these:
http://palmdesertseo.com/ – showcasing my Palm Desert SEO skills.
http://meilanimacdonald.com/ – a complex website with many features, highlighting a branding service provider.
http://ranchomiragehealthrehabilitation.com/ – a basic website for a rehab center in Rancho Mirage.
http://ithasitsplace.com/ – a website created with and for a Professional Organizer in the valley.

Branding ScreenMobile

Today, I posted this on Facebook.

“New project: Make the brand, “ScreenMobile” synonymous with “screen repair“. In the same way we say Kleenex and it means tissue, I want people to know that if they need any window screen repaired, or any custom screen installation done at home, there’s only one name you need to know; ScreenMobile. Marketing gurus, chime in!
https://www.facebook.com/screenmobile.corporation

This post is a continuation of that premise.

So, you have to ask, how did Kleenex come to mean tissue? Ask someone for a Kleenex, and you will get some kind of a tissue, made by any number of makers. The point is, the name and the brand is synonymous with the product. The chances are pretty good that you are going to buy Kleenex brand tissues, simply because you know that’s what you want. They are one in the same.

Furthermore, I want a search for the term retractable screen door to return a link to ScreenMobile’s website on the product page that discusses that particular product.

I’m starting this project on 10/15/2013. Let’s see how long it takes for ScreenMobile to dominate the search results for screen repair and retractable screen door.

Posting here should share this to Fb, Tw, and G+

I’m going to strengthen my SEO chops with a challenge:

Soon, a link to the page on the Screenmobile Corporation website for retractable screen doors will appear on the first page of Google search results. Let’ see how long it takes to make this true! I first posted this challenge on Facebook on November 17th. Perhaps we’ll see our result before the end of this year, 2013.

First, we need a few sentences with our target phrase in the mix. Since we want Google to see where we mention retractable screen doors, that phrase is linked to Screenmobile’s web page for that family of products; we’ll have to provide a few morsels of spider chow with that association in place. Yes, we’ve already done it a few times on this page, but if you go to their site, you’ll find that Screenmobile offers no less than nine different manufacturers of retractable screen doors for our linking pleasure.

So, let’s talk about those nine choices right here!

Screenmobile has 9 different choices for Retractable Screen Doors

  1. Phantom Retractable Screen Doors
  2. Mirage Retractable Screen Doors
  3. Clearview Retractable Screen Doors
  4. Stowaway Retractable Screen Doors
  5. Aira Retractable Screen Doors
  6. Vanishing Retractable Screen Doors
  7. Reel Retractable Screen Doors
  8. Genius Retractable Screen Doors
  9. Roll-Away Retractable Screen Doors

New Challenges, New Skills part 3

OK, here is the end of the story.

So, we’ve downloaded our Fb history to a zip file on our computer. We’ve extracted the text from that file and have done all the find and replace functions to get each record on one line in Excel, with each record having an individual time and date stamp. That took some work, since there were three components to the original download text and we had to do a couple of passes, employing delimiter creation for the purpose of separating text to columns. All of this took just a bit of trial and error, but we got it done in part 2 of this story.

Finally, today, the original goal of reversing the chronological order was achieved by simply numbering the lines (or rows, in Excel), then using that series of numbers to do the sorting. Since Facebook lists your most recent activity and status reports at the top of the timeline, if someone wants to see that same story starting from the beginning of time, this work had to be done.

This is the end of this tale. Thanks to Mardi Boettcher for posing the problem. It was definitely a worthwhile challenge and I learned a few things along the way.

New Challenges, New Skills part 2

If you are following this thread, you will recall I had been challenged to manage some data downloaded from Fb. You can download your timeline, with everything in it and then do what you will with same.

One of my associates wanted to put the text into an Excel spreadsheet with one line per record. But, Fb doesn’t bring it down quite so nicely. Your time stamp is on line one, the status description is on line two, and if you’ve uploaded photos, and probably in a few other status updates, where there are multiple lines of text, that stuff is on yet another line. What’s a poor user to do?

It’s a neat trick, but nothing new. You have to use Word, or some other editor, to do a find and replace. In this case, all time stamps ended in PDT (or was it PST?) – so, I replaced PDT, paragraph mark, with PDT, semicolon. For the records where there were no multiple lines and no photo uploads, I got a nice clean separation of date field and status. Then I did a second pass, where I replaced Uploads, paragraph mark, with Uploads, semicolon. This parsed about 98% of the records.

Now I had several hundred lines, with one record per line, with the fields separated by semicolons. Excel does a nice job with that delimiter, so all that was left to do what the old, “Text to columns” function in Excel and almost all of the records were in neat columns in an Excel spreadsheet.

I’m sure you can figure out how to do this with your word processor and spreadsheet applications. Oh, I almost left out a step. Peculiar to Office 2013 and not evident with Office 2010, I had to paste the original text data into Notepad, to get the paragraph markers, then copy paste it from there to Word. Figure that out and get back to me.

Enjoy!

WordPress Hosting

After a couple of years with Bluehost, I’m now looking around at other hosting providers. I cannot go into details about why I may switch, except to say that I am looking for better response time. If I can get that, it will be worth the trouble and the pain that goes with changing service providers.

With every change I make to WP websites, I have to wait (only) several seconds for the update to be processed, before I can see the results on a page. You might think I’ve become impatient, but honestly, I think if you can have something in two or three seconds, instead of five or six, you may start to do the math. Simply put, if you could reduce the time it takes to get a thing done by cutting it in half, you probably should.

That’s all I’m going to say for now. Tune in later for results of my exploration and discovery.

Communications on a Grand Stage

Today, I listened with interest to a friend on the radio. Dominique Fruchtman is one of the owners of Desert Cow Computers and she now has her own time slot on the radio, Saturdays, at noon, on 1450 AM.

So many things I write today are all about communications in its many forms. Radio takes us right back to “old school” where there is nothing to post, nothing to read, no time to contemplate a well crafted response. You simply listen to someone who knows what she’s talking about, you drink it in (or take notes while having lunch, as I did), then it’s over. There, you had an hour to hear someone answer questions on technology – everything from viruses to backup and minimum specs for your next new computer, was yours for just tuning in and paying attention. My advice, tune in again, next week!

I’ll be back for more. For now, let me just say, congratulations Dom! You knocked it out of the park with your first at bat. I’m happy to call you friend.

Descriptive Length

This is in answer to the question:
How Long Should Your Business Description Be in the Google Places for Business Dashboard?

So the recommended length? You should use just enough words needed to describe what you do in a compelling way.

Shortly after getting started with SEO, this question comes up. It is second to: How long should my title tag be for the best search results?

So, I’ll add another post about that topic.

Keeping these posts brief is also part of the plan!

SEO Projects In Progress

Go ahead and search – Palm Desert SEO expert, or Coachella Valley SEO expert. Here, I’ll make it easy for you.

Just click either of the following links: Palm Desert SEO expert, or Coachella Valley SEO expert

Those two phrases are known as long tailed search terms. They are focused on two things; location and topic.

If you search for SEO expert, without the location, I’m happy to report, one of my websites shows up at the bottom of page one of Google’s search results.
So, I’m on the front page, below the fold, for a search that returns over 15 million results. Wow, that’s good news!

Who cares? What’s my point?

Doing business locally makes sense to me. So, if you are looking for a local SEO expert, find me, call me and let’s get started on your project.

Stumble Upon Stuff v.1

That version number suggests this won’t be a stand-alone entry. Today, while looking for a domain name that suggests the idea of keeping business local (that’s a topic for a whole other rant), I came upon a backlinks analysis tool. You can find it here: http://www.dirgio.com/ba/ – and if you enter your domain name, you’ll find which sites link back to your domain. Cool, huh?

Well, that’s nowhere near the punch line. Wait for it! Wait for it….

One site that links back to rouzell.com is: http://www.reocities.com/Augusta/8928/ This is a website I created way back when, like around 1996 or 1997, It was updated a few times, like when our beloved Champagne died and I created a digital memorial to her life and times. She was a real beauty! But, that’s not the punch line.

ReoCities turns out to be the Phoenix of GeoCities, an early “do-it-yourself” website creation website that allowed you to put together a site using some pretty basic file transfer utilities. It was pretty slick for the time and I thought it was a good idea to create these neighborhoods, or cities, and you could choose where your website would be listed. I chose Augusta, based on my passion for golf at that time. GeoCities was purchased by Yahoo!, who then shut down the site (for reasons I can only assume had to do with a lack of revenue – so you have to wonder why they bought it in the first place!) and if you were unfortunate enough to have spent any time on your creations there, you were about to be left high and dry by the then almighty, Yahoo! Enter ReoCities. Just one letter away from the aforementioned GeoCities, created specifically for the purpose of collecting and redeploying most of the data comprising GeoCities.

Go ahead and type in reocities.com and read all about it. When you get to the end of the story, click the last link on the right. Where it says, “madebyabi” and read some of that stuff. This guy is a “GeekJock”, self-proclaimed and he freely offers links back to his sites, his email, etc. I dropped him a line to thank him for his efforts to help transition geo to reo in the cities resurrection.

OK, there’s no punch line. This was just another example of random ramblings about how one thing leads to another and the path is as much fun as the destination. In the end, I relived a bit of history and found a new online resource for cool things done solely for the purpose of just being good, I guess. Also, I’m following Abi Noda on Twitter now, just to see what he is up to lately.

This post will find a short link and introduction on Twitter in a few minutes. For now, this is all I have to say. Here’s hoping you found this enlightening or at least somewhat entertaining. I know I did.

Oh, Dear!

While showing my Rouzell.com website to a new prospect, I clicked on the Blog link and enjoyed the embarrassing moment of, “Oh, Dear!” It has been some time since I posted anything new. You may be saying, “Thank you, Captain Obvious.” And, I deserve that, too.

That is not what drew me back to post, though. What did is the realization that whenever I find something that works for me, I feel an obligation to share it with my people. That’s you, if you are reading this!

The title of this entry came from my search results for a tool to remove duplicate items from Outlook (that’s part of Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus – if you really must know). You’d think they would have an acronym for that by now. Anyhow, I found a tool called ODIR. In my mind, pronounced; “Oh Dear!” That acronym stands for – you might have guessed – Outlook Duplicate Items Remover.

I would take the time to go through the set up and operation of this utility, but their help file is adequate and should fill that need. One caveat is that they have not updated their instructions to account for the change from menus to the ribbon implemented in the 201o version of Outlook. So, I’ll provide this one clue: Add-ins tab is where you’ll find the new tool. From there, it’s pretty easy to see what you can do.

If you need more help with any or all of this, click back over to Rouzell.com or the new MouseHelp.com for my contact information and call or write. I’ll talk to you then, or see you soon, whichever is most appropriate to your need.
