I was compelled to write this in answer to my own question….

before we had all of this networking technology, we had floppy disks. One person would create a file; a finished word processing document, for example, and having written that file to a floppy disk, he would walk over to his associate with disk in hand and complete the file transfer. This was known as (seriously, look it up) “sneakernet”.

Dilution is the word that comes to mind when I think of all the things I’ve done with computers. A lifetime ago now, (well, 15 years ago, anyway) I was working for Lockheed. There you were allowed to do only one thing at a time. You could dabble in other things, spend your own time learning new things, but whatever was your assignment, it was just the one thing. The last job I had at Lockheed was purely tech support.
This meant that the only thing I was to do, was to respond to anyone who called for help with his or her computer. There was enough to do that we had a team of four or five people, as we served all of the Palo Alto research center, where there were several buildings.
Why do I mention this and what does it have to do with dilution? It’s because there’s something very simple about having only one task. It may be boring, but it really makes you focus. And, at that time, I was not blogging, there was no Facebook or Twitter, and although I was working on web pages at the time, that was extra-curricular and something I did for my own edification.
Today, I do just about anything related to computers, networking, communications, websites, social media, blogging, and SEO. Since being involved in all of these things has been a way of life for so long, it brings up the question of how it would feel to experience the purity of doing one thing today. That mystery will remain, as I write this blog post, while considering the content of several websites, while thinking about fixing computers and wondering what is affecting the network for a couple of my clients. I’m sure I’ll post something on Facebook and Twitter (in fact, a link to this post will soon be there) and I’ll be working on a few websites later today.
This is how things are at the moment. I could lump all of that under “tech support”, I suppose. But far more purely, today, it is all about communications!

This is a sign of the times, I suppose. Beware substituting definitions found on the Internet for those you would find in Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language, New Deluxe Edition, from Thunder Bay Press. I’m using the 2001 publication and feel lucky to have this volume.

This might be the silliest thing I have to say, but I have to say it. If something stops working on your computer for no reason at all, you probably should reboot your computer. Restarting Windows computers does a “reset” of the system in a way that often restores full functionality. And, you’ll save yourself some level of angst, frustration, and potential wasted time, if you’ll just reboot and get back to work.
You can relieve yourself of that feeling of disgust for Microsoft by welcoming this opportunity to “take five” while your computer logs off, shuts down, and the system restarts. Seriously, don’t watch the computer reboot. As soon as you click, “Restart” – get up, think of some productive or more relaxing thing you can do for the next few minutes and go!
To try to put a positive spin on this situation, I offer this analogy. Suppose you stopped your car at some in and out kind of place, where you did not shut off the engine, because you are coming right back after doing what you are going to do. When you get back into your car, you find the engine still running, but your steering wheel won’t move, or you cannot depress the brake pedal, or you can’t move the gear selector into drive or reverse. Reflecting on the approach in paragraph two above, you take the Microsoft approach to resolution. You turn the key in the ignition to shut off your car, take a breather and a moment to relax, then start the engine again, and all your controls are restored. Now you can steer, brake, and shift gears and drive away. This would be a minor miracle! Yes, we know it doesn’t work that way, because your car is not running Windows.
But Microsoft Windows very often does work this way. It is a mystery or a conundrum, but either way, you get to start using your computer again and get back to all of that “time saving work” you were doing before you were forced to take a break.
Learn this one lesson and you’ll spend less time with that sinking feeling, you’ll make fewer calls crying out for help, you’ll enjoy a few minutes of up time as you take a short walk and do something better than staring into the monitor, and you’ll probably reduce your blood pressure and the level of stress in your life. Thank you, Microsoft, for making all of this special time available to me.

I’m going to strengthen my SEO chops with a challenge:
Soon, a link to the page on the Screenmobile Corporation website for retractable screen doors will appear on the first page of Google search results. Let’ see how long it takes to make this true! I first posted this challenge on Facebook on November 17th. Perhaps we’ll see our result before the end of this year, 2013.
First, we need a few sentences with our target phrase in the mix. Since we want Google to see where we mention retractable screen doors, that phrase is linked to Screenmobile’s web page for that family of products; we’ll have to provide a few morsels of spider chow with that association in place. Yes, we’ve already done it a few times on this page, but if you go to their site, you’ll find that Screenmobile offers no less than nine different manufacturers of retractable screen doors for our linking pleasure.
So, let’s talk about those nine choices right here!
